How to test a used iPhone in 10 minutes
Start with identity and locks, test expensive parts next, then finish with a call, charging and a reset with the seller. Pay only after completing the ten-minute check.
Minutes 0–3: identity and locks
A beautiful display cannot offset a locked phone. First confirm that the device can genuinely become yours.
- Match model, storage and IMEI in Settings with the box and receipt when available.
- Ask the seller to disable Find My and sign out in front of you.
- Check for undeclared company management or carrier locks.
Minutes 3–7: expensive parts
Display, cameras, battery and biometrics can turn a bargain into a costly repair.
- Show white and black backgrounds, raise brightness and look for stains, dead pixels or uneven touch.
- Test every camera, focus, flash, a video with sound, Face ID or Touch ID.
- Open Battery Health and parts history; every warning needs an explanation and a price adjustment.
Minutes 7–10: real use
Finish with network, ports and accounts. Use your own SIM when possible.
- Make a call and test mobile data, Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, microphone and speakers.
- Connect a cable, confirm charging and inspect the port without force.
- Record defects in chat, agree the price and reset the iPhone with the seller.

Should I pay before the reset?
No. The seller must remove their account and disable Find My first, or the iPhone may remain unusable.
Is 85% battery health always bad?
No. It is one signal. Also check warnings, real battery life, heat and the asking price.
What if the seller refuses testing?
Walk away. A serious meetup allows time to check the phone in a public place.
