Cross-check identity

Boxes and enclosures are easy to copy. Identity must remain consistent across independent places.

• Match serial, IMEI, model, colour and storage in Settings, on the device and on the box.
• Enter the serial yourself on Apple's official service; one result is not enough when other details differ.
• Do not treat an IMEI photo sent earlier as proof; check the phone handed to you.

Inspect iOS, not the decoration

Some imitations copy the home screen but fail when Apple services are opened.

• Open the App Store, Settings, Software Update and storage information.
• Test Face ID or Touch ID, Siri, Find My and several camera modes.
• Look for strange translations, uneven animations, Android menus or apps that cannot update.

Control the meetup

Pressure and rushing stop the checks that reveal inconsistencies.

• Meet in a public place with connectivity.
• Do not send a deposit to reserve an implausibly low price.
• If identity does not match, stop rather than negotiate the risk.
